Guide-Lines for the Easy Maintainance and Care of Your Family Tent

by Don Korte

If you and your family enjoy going on great camping holidays in your family tent then you will surely want your tent to last a long time. Ensuring that you get the most from your family tent is as simple as following a few easy guide-lines.

When you are looking for somewhere to pitch the tent, and you are not camping in a camping ground, then you need to take a look at what is around you. Firstly, ensure that the spot you choose is free of stones, sticks and other debris that could potentially damage your tent. Secondly, you need to make sure that the ground is flat. If it is not then you should make certain that everyone sleeps with their heads at the higher end so blood does no rush to their heads all night. That is why finding a flat location is always preferable

Assuming that you find just the right location to set up your tent it is time to choose which direction you want the entrance to face. Most people choose to face the fire, but some choose their favorite view. Do not forget to make use of what is around you. For example, a good size tree can offer shade as well as some protection if and/or when there is a bad turn in the weather.

It does not make any difference what kind of tent you own, it will definitely need to be staked. Whether you own a dome tent, a cabin ten, or even the ones that pop up and that claim on the packaging that no staking is necessary, if you do not want it blown away, staking is certainly going to be necessary.

When it comes to the tent poles some manufacturers have created a coding system using either numbers or colors. This can make the assembling of the tent poles much easier. If your tent poles are not coded then you can either assemble them is such a way that you can distinguish between the long ones and the short ones. Or you can take the easy route and color code them yourself. All you will need is a few minutes and some different colored tape.

Before you erect your tent, you should always use a piece of plastic or a tarp as a base to put your tent on. Doing so will prevent ground moisture from coming up thru the floor. It will also help prevent tears and keep the floor of your tent in like-new condition.

Dig a trench around the tent if you anticipate rainfall. If you do not do so, you will end up with rain water collecting under the tent. Because of condensation your tent is waterproof, however, it loses its resistance to water if you touch the sides. And remember, when the vacation is over the tent will need to be cleaned, so, to make that a little less of a hassle, put down some rugs for everyone to wipe their shoes and feet on when entering the tent.

Now when your camping trip comes to an end, use a rag to clean up any dirty spots and sweep the tent clean. Failure to do so will cause the dirt to stick to the walls making your tent very unsightly and less enjoyable the next time you go camping. If your tent is wet at the end of your camping trip, always dry your tent completely before storing the tent. This will prevent molding and material deterioration. Following these guidelines will ensure your family tent will give you years of service and camping adventures.

Why Down Sleeping Bags Are The Only Way To Go

by Mike Reston

Boy the old sleeping bag has sure changed thanks to technology. Today's materials, that help you stay toasty warm are very high tech and the designs are too. Here are some facts to help you know which of the sleeping bags you need.

You will have those times where it gets cold at night when you are camping. That is why when you are looking to buy a sleeping bag you must think about the coldest temp you will encounter not the warmest. In the summer or warm climates you only need to look for a +35 degree rated sleeping bag to take along.

For the higher altitudes in the warm summertime, or the spring or fall months, the bags probably need to be a +10 to +35 type rating. The wintertime adventure seekers need to look at the range of -10 to +10 for the rating on bags. Now for the ones going on the long cold weather expedition type trips, they will need the warmest bags of all with the -10 or lower type rating.

These ratings are only approximate figures for warmth on these bags from the manufacturers. All people get at different levels of warmth when they sleep, no one is the same. Say you are one that likes a heavy blanket to sleep with, you may need a sleeping bag about 10 degrees higher than norm in rating. But what if you are constantly throwing the blankets off, you then may need a bag that is about 10 degrees lower in norm in rating.

The insulating material, used in a sleeping bag, is the most vital part of it. With today's bags you have 2 materials to choose from: synthetic or goose down. Both of the materials do have their good points and bad points, while down bags are thought to be the best due to their ratio of warmth-to-bulk or the warmth-to-weight being so great.

Down is so easy to compress and is also lightweight but has the ability to keep you very insulated. Maybe that is why geese able to fly and be warm in the winter! Most people buy down for the durability too it can insulate you through years of use.

With mentioning all that about down, the sleeping bags also come in some good quality synthetic materials today, and this type of material is being improved upon as time goes by. It is true though that a synthetic sleeping bag has more weight in it than the down sleeping bag, the synthetic bags are the more desired ones in wet conditions, they do better than down under these conditions. Down actually has very little ability to insulate if it gets wet.

So if you are going to an area that is known for damp climate, you need to thick about getting a synthetic sleeping bag just because of the reason listed above. Also there are a lot of people that happen to be allergic as far as down goes, but the synthetically made bags are hypoallergenic. Now if price is your main consideration the synthetic is more economically priced than the down, so this may decide which one you will choose for your adventure.
