Selecting The Appropriate Knife For Your Outdoor Sport

There are diverse sorts of knives accessible, and just like with many other tools, if you don't have the proper one, it's bound to create issues. A professional quality knife will hold up for a lifetime with little upkeep. Here are some guidelines for picking out a proper knife for your outdoor sport.

Nearly all hunting knives are intended for skinning. If you would like your knife to be excellent for skinning, the most important thing you should look for is the nature of the blade. You want a rounded or drop point so that when you are "ripping" the skin, the point of your knife will not dig into the meat. Also, you'll likely want a nonmoving blade knife, as folding blades have too many gaps where blood and mess can get trapped.

Deciding on a knife for camping can be difficult because you need a knife with versatile functions. You may need this knife to prepare food, trim branches, amend gear, as well as a hundred other purposes. On these grounds, you'll frequently notice that a Swiss army knife or multi tool may satisfy your needs best. Also, you may prefer to include a saw, hatchet, or machete in your pack prior to leaving for harder cutting jobs.

You should probably get a fillet knife for fishing. A fillet knife is well designed for cleaning fish, and it can also cut fishing line well, which is the other main task for a fishing knife. There are also electric fillet knives available for the fisherman that is constantly catching many fish. If you plan on fishing in salt water, be sure your knife is designed to withstand the corrosion of saltwater.

Trappers will generally want a skinning knife, much like a hunting knife. A fixed blade or a folding knife will work equally well; this would be a preference of the sportsman. Tougher tasks are normally done with an axe, so a second knife isn't normally necessary.

A boater's main need for a knife is cutting line. You'll need a sharp knife that is easily accessible and quickly deployed, in case you need to cut a line in a hurry. Be sure that the knife will stand up to wet conditions, too. It is evident that each outdoor sport needs a specific knife. Buy a quality knife and your tasks will be easier and a quality knife will often be passed on to your kids.

Big Carp Baits And Improving Your Catches!

How your bait can really make a big difference to your catches in hidden and very obvious ways!

Scientific tests on carp feeding and nutrition often involve protein-rich foods based on casein and gelatine, but you have to ask how many of these tests involve bloodworm, zooplankton, algae, mussels, snails, all forms of insect larvae and aquatic weeds fish etc that fish thrive on. Such natural food items are easily detected by carp due to evolutionary adaptation through millennia and carp can derive maximum nutrition from these foods and digest them very efficiently indeed, and we can exploit all this in our bait use and design! We can certainly improve our catches by exploiting not only the nutritional impacts of natural food items and their profiles of stimulating substances, but by how we apply our baits and manipulate natural carp feeding behaviours also!

Carp feeding stimulation involves many carp senses in a combined way; so why not exploit as many as possible to maximise our baits, after all; (baits do not merely work by exploiting nutritional stimulation but many other factors too!) We can take into account real life fishing variables such as the way carp exploit various natural food sources as the season progresses and this will impact on bait design and bait recipes, type of baits used and how they are applied on the hook and introduced as ground bait. When fish are very much orientated to feed upon natural organisms then this too can be exploited by good bait design, and we can exploit and manipulate the presence of natural organisms by using our bait to deliberately attract these too.

When I began carp fishing in the 1970s a couple of cans of luncheon meat or sweetcorn, or a pound of homemade boilies, ground bait, paste bait or a pint of maggots or a loaf of bread would have been easily enough bait for a successful 12 hour trip. Now it is easily possible to introduce 1000 boilies upon arrival and get a fish hooked within 10 minutes on some waters. It seems very obvious that the use of more bait (despite far higher stocking levels,) has affected feeding behaviours at certain times of the year especially during the colder months.

When I look back to the 1970's and 1980's, often carp catches composed of single and double figure fish because much of the time was spent fishing waters that had yet to grow fish to over twenty or thirty pounds. It seems mad that today on the right waters, you can pretty easily catch perhaps 5 twenty pound fish in a day plus many other big double figure carp, when 25 years ago such a catch would be the total for a successful season on the vast majority of UK waters! Because bigger carp simply did not exist in anywhere near the huge numbers and exceptionally bigger sizes found in UK waters today, it is very difficult for those newer to carp fishing today to imagine just how incredibly hard carp fishing used to be in the UK.

Not so long ago the capture of twenty carp of over twenty pounds in a season was a milestone few of even the top anglers had achieved. It is astounding to me today looking back, that you can catch twenty carp of around twenty pounds or over on certain UK waters in just a week or less; and this is very much due to the impact of the highly nutritional free baits applied by carp anglers over recent decades. Correct bait application is a massive edge which simply cannot be underestimated but is often extremely under-rated!

I recall catching 23 carp in 5 days averaging just less than twenty pounds, and topped by a mid-thirty from an Essex reservoir back in 1991. I know this type of result is very possible for anyone utilising good bait application on many UK waters today; especially now our UK carp stocks have grown on so much, especially during the last 20 or so years! If you understand more about bait and its application you can keep catching more when times are hard and also achieve outstanding results far more regularly, but avoid wasting expensive bait too!

I know anglers in Spain, France, and in the States and elsewhere can achieve catches that far exceed those possible in the UK; but still it is the effective suitable application of bait that really is a predominant and vital key factor in such giant fish catches. If you speak to leading anglers in various countries around the world, you discover that detailed bait know-how is one topic that is of crucial importance. Considering that carp are extraordinarily adaptive creatures, it is no surprise that by improving our knowledge of how our baits works and how to adapt and apply them creatively has always kept us ahead...

Camping gear

Go to the large shopping malls like Wal-Mart. They hold an array of basic camping gear available at a wide range of budget. They are also great for purchasing cheap but good enough camping gear (Just make sure to consider buying the more durable equipment, not just the good-for-one-use items, if you are a frequent camper).

You are going camping! That is exciting. But with all of the things you need to bring, you are all confused and your idea of fun is slowly draining. How the hell are you going to start gathering up your camping gear. You personally need to ensure that you have all the basic camping gear in the right place before you start camping. Here are sure ways to help you round up your stuff to compose the best of your camping gear.

Ask around among family and friends if they have the camping gear you need. There is always the practical benefit of mutual borrowing. Go ahead and buy one or two quality items that you can exchange. Just make sure that you do not cause damage to others' invested equipment. Before buying anything else, consider the best backpack you could ever get to hold in the rest of your camping gear.

Some Advantages:It goes without saying that the first obvious advantage is the price. If you know where to look, you will probably save yourself hundreds of dollars for very good quality camping gear once they become used.

The fact is that many people who get themselves all geared up for camping will only actually go camping only a few times before they decide that it is just not their thing and end up selling their gear. Some of this gear is high priced and of high quality and if you cannot bargain the price down, at least you would have yourself some very high quality equipment at a fraction of the original costs.

Some used camping gear could be unwanted gifts or maybe not up to the quality that the seller had hoped for when they made the original purchase. So it definitely pays to ask as many question as possible before you buy the equipment. You can avoid spending a lot of money by buying used camping gear but you can also bring home items that are totally useless.

If you are just starting out, it is wise not to spend a lot of money at first until you know what you are doing. One way to minimize your risks is to research the camping gear items online and know what to look for before you approach the seller.

Don’t Lose Your Way With A Navigon 2100T Portable GPS

by Irwin Fowler

I was in shock when my father told me he was lost when he called the house. Immediately I panicked and began to worry. Right away I started thinking that perhaps he has Alzheimers or something even worse. This could not be happening, he was a taxi driver. After my finding out that information, I questioned him. Is there any restaurant near you, or are there any people near by to help you, street signs near you at all, can you tell me if you cut the car off? Grrr!

I felt a lot better when he told me that all the new streets that had recently been put in on that side of town had made him lose track of where his turn was. He made me admit that I thought he was losing his mind to old age. I was relieved to find out he was still in his right mind.

When I got time, I searched different places in search of a GPS for my dad. It must have been a simple process, because after he pulled over and got out of his car, he looked up our numbers in his black book to use his pre-programmed mobile phone. He would still have his old humongous phone, if I hadn't shown him different.

After several questions I found the Navigon 2100T portable GPS. In a sense what makes the portable feature really awesome is that it can be put in either the car or the truck. Too small like the Magellan Roadmate,or it's also not big and bulky like the Cobra GPSM 2500. Whatever, he wears bifocals.

The other neat feature I liked was the 3 D images that Navigon 2100T portable GPS offers. I didn't find this on any of the other models I looked at. It gives a very realistic look to the roads that will make my dad's navigation attempts a lot easier.

Each one includes "test to speech" technology. It is a great feature! In the past, GPS systems might tell you to turn left after you are down the road 15 miles. This small but fascinating machine will even inform you to make a left at "Carlisle Street." My father is aware of streets. Its not more than 15 miles. He would not even dream of pushing the little button that allows you to see how far you have gone in the car. Once you have made your turn onto the wrong road, it takes about five minutes until you realize you wanted the next left. This is not the case with the Navigon 2100T portable GPS system.

It also has a replaceable SD card that can be updated for new traffic control. That way it you are having difficulties it can provide you with different ways to get to your location.

And it was quite affordable, too. I finally got two on Amazon for a little over $300.00 Of course, I wanted one also. In fewer than 30 days my father knew the Navigon 2100T portable GPS better than me and was showing me things I didn't know.

California Hiking Trails – There are a number of different types

Posted on January 19, 2009 at 6:22 pm in
by Penelope SanMateo

There are times of the year that hiking in California is so beautiful that you will want to go every weekend! Maybe even take a week and see more than one area of the state on different trails. If you are looking for some of the best hiking trails around rivers, glaciers, deserts, the coastline or the grasslands California has it all.

If you choose Mount Tallac you will have a 9.4 mile round trip hike with elevations reaching 9,735 ft. with a gain of 3,255 ft during the hike. Make sure you bring lots of water, you are working hard and your body needs to have the fluids replenished to sustain the healthy level you need for this type of hike. There are both wooded areas and flatlands for you to enjoy on this hike. It is considered to be one of the best hiking trails at Lake Tahoe where you will enjoy the beautiful views from the summit. When you get to the switchbacks toward the top you will experience a real change to hot, just be ready for it.

If you choose to hike Upper Yosemite Falls you will be on a 7.2 mile round trip hike with an elevation at the summit of 6,526 ft and an elevation gain of 2,700 ft. This hike is best if done from May to July because the waterfall is at its full force during this time and the view is beautiful. This hike will take you through a section of switchbacks through the forest and then you will enter the flat area of the trial with your first view of the falls. The mist from the falls will be heavy as you get closer and then you will encounter another set of switchbacks before the summit. These are very steep and the most difficult area to climb so be prepared to work hard here.

Let's switch areas and go to Mosaic Canyon and look at the hike that is available there. The trail is just 2.5 miles round trip. It is best to take this one from December to March to avoid the extreme heat of the desert. Be sure to bring plenty of water, you'll need it. While hiking on the mountains is fabulous so is canyon hiking. The canyon formations are beautiful. You may even see some desert life on your hike. This is the hottest place in the US so be sure to pack in lots of water..regardless of the time of year.

If you want the most challenging trail in California you will want to hike Mt. Shasta. This trail is 12 miles round trip with body assaulting climbs. Not only is the climb a challenge physically but at an elevation of 14,179 ft at the summit and a gain of 7,259 during your climb you are going to experience pain you only thought about before. You need to plan this hike for between May and mid July due to the changing weather. In the spring the storms can hit quickly and violently and in the summer you are facing lava rocks that are nasty on your body and feet and the risk of rolling boulders that have come loose with the snow melt that will roll down the mountain and your chances of getting out of the way are limited at best. Not only that but you will face the problem of altitude sickness so be sure you hike with a partner for safety reasons and practical sense. You must be in superior physical condition to take on this challenge. If you aren't, find another path to hike.

Going on a hike on Mt. Shasta will provide you with a different view and challenge. You will need sunscreen, sunglasses, an ice axe and shelter. Since you won't have much warning if the weather is going to turn on you take the shelter to offer protection when, and if, you need it. Bring along your crampons, helmet, summit pass, and winter boots and wear extra layers of cloths, and again, plenty of water. The snow around Helen's Lake is contaminated by human and animal urine so don't plan on drinking melted snow or ice...nasty!

Half Dome is a 16 mile round trip hike with an elevation gain of 4,800 ft to the elevation of 8,842. This is a great hike for between late May and early October. Because of the location, view and degree of difficulty people from all over the world come to hike at Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. This is a day hike that challenges you so if you aren't prepared with a great degree of fitness and lots of experience pass on this one. The climb through the switchbacks is rocky so be careful not to injure an ankle. If you reach the top of Nevada Falls (the halfway point) you will want to assess your skills and ability to continue on as well as adjust to the altitude change. To continue on be prepared to have a very steep, excruciatingly long climb to the back of the Half Dome rock. This is a most difficult climb with more switchbacks continually assaulting your body. If you have done your research you know about the Half Dome cables but you can't know the shock and fear experienced once you are in front of them until you are there. Now you need to reevaluate your physical condition to see if you are up to the risks involved in continuing up. The view from there is terrific with Yosemite Valley below, but make sure you are ready for this type of challenge before you even begin the hike. It isn't for the weak or physically unprepared.
